most marketing is a waste of time and money

…if you haven't laid the right branding foundations, that is.

Even when you're doing all the right things, you can still get all the wrong results – because your positioning, persona, messaging, and verbal identity are what your marketing depends on to actually work.

Let's be real.

I can hand you the exact 7-figure funnel strategy I've tried, tested, and proven across countless clients to generate revenue repeatedly and predictably. I can throw in every template you need – your pages, your email sequences. I can even give you the copy swipe files, so you can see exactly how it should all be written.

But if you don't know:

1. What makes you different from hundreds of other coaches solving the exact same problem

2. How much of your personality to pack into your brand, so people buy into you (and later, from you)

3. How to communicate clearly – not cleverly – how people will actually benefit from what you're offering so they see the value

4. How to sound like you, instead of literally everyone else in the industry, or worse – a robot

…it's all pointless.

Get these wrong, and even the strategies making other people millions won't make you a penny.

If you want to cash in on your calling, you've got to get this locked in.

tell me, is this you?

  • 1

You genuinely struggle to answer what makes you different to, rather than better than, your competitors. You don't want to do things cheaper or faster, so you need to find a way to stand out.

  • 2

People compare your private coaching to other people's group programmes, or worse, their memberships. You don't want to be seen as the entry-level option. You want to charge high-ticket.

  • 3

People say they love your energy in person, but it isn't translating properly online. You want to be professional, but it feels more like you're performing. You never really know what, or how much, to share.

  • 4

People like and comment on your posts, but engagement isn't conversion. You're starting to wonder whether they just see you as an influencer they follow rather than an entrepreneur they buy from.

  • 5

When you explain what you do, it takes ages for people to get it. You've been advised to niche down, but you're scared of missing out, or getting bored. You also worry your work is too holistic, or not specialised enough.

  • 6

You struggle to sell your offer, because there isn't a measurable outcome. What you deliver is more about internal shifts than external results – so people see it as a "nice-to-have," rather than something they need.

  • 7

You know you need to speak in plain English, but your work is psychological or spiritual, and involves a lot of abstract concepts. You don't know how to describe it in practical, tangible language, without resorting to jargon.

  • 8

You've reread old content and can't even tell whether you or your nearest direct competitor wrote it. But you can tell when you've used ChatGPT or Claude, because they've got a stronger tone of voice than you.

imagine if...

  • Your following grows like weeds, because now you know exactly who you're talking to – it's quick and easy to create content that gets engagement.

  • Your followers move off social and into your world – subscribing to your newsletter, downloading your lead magnet, browsing your sales pages.

  • Your discovery calls get booked, and people actually show up. And when they do, you know you'll close them, because you always do now.

  • When you launch, you sell out. Every time. Without you having to extend the cart, or throw in any last-minute bonuses.

  • But, truth be told, you don't even need to show up and sell – your evergreen funnel does it for you, on repeat, while you sleep.

  • Your peers start inviting you onto their podcasts, and to speak at their events. You also make real friends in your industry.

  • You start getting actual coverage – not the BS pay-to-pay "features" going around right now, but proper press and TV appearances.

  • And the invitations only get bigger. People who found you through your Substack or podcast start asking for the keynote. The TED Talk.

  • You might even find brands you've loved and used for years reaching out first – asking if you'll partner with them, or become an affiliate.

  • And before you know it, your products are stocked in actual stores, and people recognise you outside the coaching industry.

e.g. Someone's telling your aunt how much you changed their life, waiting in line at Big Tesco (or Target).

THAT'S WHY YOU SHOULD BOOK MY

30-day sprint

So you can make this vision of yours a reality.

The truth is, your marketing won't work well – or at all – unless your brand positioning, persona, messaging, and verbal identity do. So let's lay those foundations properly, once and for all.

this if for you if you're:

JUST STARTING OUT
You're ready to get going, but would rather strategise before you execute. You'd really rather not figure things out as you go, because you know you'll only have to fix mistakes later.
STRUGGLING TO GROW
You've been in business a while, but it's not moving the way you want. You might even look successful by other people's standards – but you know you're ready for the next level.
SCALING BACK, NOT FORWARD
You've had success before, but growth has stalled, or declined. The coaching industry's more saturated than ever, and staying relevant means finding your edge all over again.

but some categories of coaching are harder than others

1. You're a spiritual or energetic coach

Quantum leaping, alchemising, energy clearing – none of it can be quantified. The result is entirely subjective, which means the whole sale rests on how deeply someone already trusts your personal brand. It's the longest, hardest sales cycle there is.

Psychological and mindset coaching struggles for a similar reason: nobody wakes up thinking "I need to fix my limiting beliefs today." They think "I'm not making enough money" or "my relationship's falling apart." Both are really just extensions of the same problem – an outcome too intangible to sell on its own.

2. You're a business or marketing coach

Business and marketing coaches struggle with their own branding for a few very specific reasons:

  1. The curse of knowledge. You know every strategy and tactic there is. When working with clients, this is advantageous. But when working on your own brand, it becomes very easy to overthink every decision until you end up in a state of analysis paralysis.
  2. The identity congruence problem. For you, your marketing is proof of your competence – a live portfolio. Which means the pressure to be "perfect" is immense: you think if your content isn't flawless, your leads will assume you can't help them with theirs either.
  3. A lack of objective distance. It's impossible to read the label from inside the bottle. Also, when you look at your own business, you're looking through the lens of your own limiting beliefs and fears, which blinds you to how a cold prospect really sees you.
  4. The 'physician heal thyself' trap. You think you should know it all – so you don't hire when you need it. You wait until you're so stuck and blocked that you have no other option. Because underneath it, you're worried that if you pay someone for the very same service you provide for other people, word will get around that you're actually a bit shit at it.
  5. Depleted reserves. You give your best hours, and your best strategy and/or execution, to your clients – which means by the time you sit down to work on your own brand, you're running on fumes rather than a full tank.

If you're in one of these categories, The 30-Day Sprint matters more for you and your business than almost anyone else. Be sure to book in, so we can sort this out!

I'd struggled to describe who my membership was even for, for two years. It took Vanessa one session.

"For 2 years I have struggled to describe who and what Grow & Glow is for - is it for influencers, small businesses, service-based businesses, product-based businesses, educators...?! In one session Vanessa went BOOM - it's for this person. She has been an absolute star over the last couple of months working together on refining the messaging, and through our sessions so many new ideas and developments have come up. We've just got so many new aspects and changes coming to the membership that I just think is going to be so much more impactful and so much more valuable for our members."

My messaging was a bit of a mess. Getting clarity on what I needed to say to convert was game-changing for my confidence showing up online.

"Honestly, before I met and worked with Ness my website copy and messaging in general were a bit of a mess! I guess I always kind of bootstrapped it but making the investment into consistent, intentional copy and messaging that converts has been a game changer to the confidence I have in showing up online. Having clarity on everything from my tone of voice to my content pillars makes me feel so much more legit in business! It's helped me focus and niche down on exactly what I need to be putting out there to serve my unique audience and covert them into clients."

BRY PENNEYbranding photographer + educator

After working with Vanessa on my messaging and mindset, I never wanted to work alone again.

"Working with Vanessa opened my eyes to what was possible for me and my business. Vanessa helped clarify how to verbalise my message, while offering superb personal support. With Vanessa on your side, your business will progress in leaps and bounds. To top it off Vanessa offers her knowledge freely, giving you the confidence to grow, transform and flourish on your own. But once you've worked with Vanessa, you'll never want to work alone again!"

take a peek inside the modules

positioning

What is it?
The space you occupy in a prospect's mind – not what your offer is , but how it's perceived  next to everyone else's.

Signs you have a problem:
You struggle to answer what makes you different. The people you attract can only afford low-cost, self-paced courses – not your high-ticket, private container. You offer a 12-month package, but people keep asking for something shorter. Discovery calls feel like job interviews, because there's a total lack of trust, even when your pitch is flawless. You offer a hybrid service, and people either see you as a doer who's overcharging, or a thinker who's undercharging. You've niched down so far, people think you only solve one tiny problem – or stayed so broad, nobody's sure you solve theirs at all.

Why you have it:
You've been taught to be better  – faster, cheaper – instead of different . Better invites comparison. Different makes it impossible. You've also been told to position as an industry expert, not a thought leader – so you're competing on knowledge (which AI's already commoditised), when you should be competing on perspective. Or you've been told to niche down until it hurts, when narrowing your audience was never the same thing as differentiating your position.

How we'll solve it:
You won't just walk away with a positioning strategy for standing out in a crowded market. You'll walk away with your category-of-one angle – the thing you have that no one else does. By the end of our time together, you'll know exactly what you want to be known for, and how to make it happen, so the market can't think of your category without thinking of you. All of it laid out in your Positioning Playbook – which you'll use to inform your persona, messaging, verbal identity, and quite literally every marketing move after that.

persona

What is it?
The professional version of you – curated, not accidental – built to earn trust in a specific context.

Signs you have a problem:
People say you're "not what they expected" once they get on a call. Your content feels flat, even when the ideas are good. You either overshare until it reads like a diary entry, or stay so polished nobody feels like they know you at all. People follow you, but don't feel connected enough to buy. You come across as either all authority and no warmth – so people respect you, but don't trust you enough to open up – or all warmth and no authority, so people like you, but don't quite believe you can get them results. Your content sounds different depending on your mood that day, rather than sounding like one consistent person. You've been told you're "relatable," but not "credible" – or "credible," but not "relatable" – and can't work out how to be both at once.

Why you have it:
You've either been told to "just be yourself" – left totally unfiltered, which can actually cost you credibility rather than build it. The pressure to be "100% authentic" online has convinced a lot of coaches that holding anything back makes them fake, or out of integrity, rather than simply private. But you don't owe everyone everything. Or you've been told to reverse-engineer how people with the result you want have presented themselves – which means you end up performing as them, the same as everyone else who took the same "inspiration." Coaches will tell you how to profile your ideal client all day long. Almost none of them teach you how to profile yourself – because nobody taught them, either.

How we'll solve it:
We start with a combination of brand archetypes – Sage, Ruler, Ranger, whatever fits – as a launchpad, then fine-tune from there until it's genuinely, specifically you. We'll work out the role you actually want to play with your audience – peer, mentor, guide, whatever earns their trust fastest – and how you want to market yourself through content, too: Dream (showing the destination), Documentary (sharing the journey), or a deliberate mix of both.

messaging

What is it?
What you actually say – distilled until it's instantly clear, and impossible to confuse with anyone else's offer.

Signs you have a problem:
People say "so, what do you actually do?" – even after you've already explained it, more than once, in more precise terms each time. Your offer sounds different every time you pitch it, because you keep trying on new angles and directions, hoping one finally makes people care. Which is probably why your DMs are full of "this looks interesting" – but no one's ever curious enough to book a call, never mind motivated enough to buy.

Why you have it:
You've been taught to sound "sophisticated," and translated that into more complexity, not more clarity. You're also probably not connecting your offer to a tangible outcome at all. Humans care most about money, health, and love, roughly in that order – we're wired to seek safety and survival before we ever chase belonging, let alone self-esteem or self-actualisation. So if your messaging leads with meaning, purpose, or transformation, but never spells out what it actually does for someone's bank balance, body, or relationships, it'll always feel like a "nice idea" rather than a "must-have." You've also probably been taught to speak only to people's desires – the dream outcome – without first creating genuine problem awareness. People don't act on a dream they haven't yet admitted they need. (And there are ways to name a painful problem clearly, without shaming anyone for having it.)

How we'll solve it:
You won't just walk away with clearer copy. You'll walk away with a message so simple, and so specific, that the right people self-select in before you've even said a word to them. For example, a business coach should speak to growing their following, or making more sales – not "reaching their highest potential." One's a concrete result. The other's a nice thought nobody's ever bought anything because of. We'll dial in your "I help" statement, your elevator pitch, your brand story and throughline, and your value pillars and talking points – all of it laid out in your Messaging Framework, covering your core message, and every offer-level message underneath it.

verbal identity

What is it?
How you sound – your voice, tone, grammar, and lexicon – consistent enough that people recognise you by your words alone.

Signs you have a problem:
Your copywriter's drafts never quite sound like you, however many times you send them back. Your AI-written content gets called out as "obviously AI" – even when you swear you edited it. No two pieces of your content sound like the same person wrote them. There's inconsistency everywhere – "and" versus "&," US spelling versus UK, the emojis your VA uses that you'd quite literally never choose yourself. People feel like they're talking to three or four different people, from finding you on social to signing your contract. And whilst they probably are, that's not how it should appear.

Why you have it:
When people get their branding done, they go to a visual expert, not a verbal one. So they walk away with in-depth guidelines for keeping their look consistent, and next to nothing for their sound. What little they do get is basic, because it's written by a designer, not a writer. You've been handed a set of adjectives to describe your voice – authoritative, aspirational, confident – and still have no idea what to actually write. Or you got a list of dos and don'ts (yes to swearing, no to the word "girlboss") that tells you what to avoid, but nothing about what makes you sound like you.

How we'll solve it:
You won't leave without a full set of brand guidelines for your voice, tone, grammar, and lexicon – specific enough that anyone, or anything, could pick them up and sound convincingly like you. All of it laid out in your Verbal Identity Guide, so you can finally delegate and automate with confidence, instead of redoing everyone's work yourself, or scrubbing out every AI tell.

hey there

i'm vanessa

A 3x award-winning psycholinguist, turned branding and marketing strategist for coaches.

I've spent the last twenty years building some of the most compelling, converting brands in the world – from Fortune 500 companies like Coca-Cola, Amazon, and Walt Disney, to celebrities, influencers, and the coaches I now work with exclusively.

Not only do I have a PhD in psycholinguistics – I also hold postgraduate degrees in education and research methods, an ICF-accredited coaching certification, training in five modalities of therapy, a Chartered Institute of Marketing qualification, and a diploma from the Institute of Sales Management. So I don't just have lived experience making money for clients. I'm actually trained to, as well.

I genuinely don't leave a single stone unturned – which is why I've won three industry awards, been featured in Vogue, ELLE, and Marie Claire, and am due to publish my debut book, Express Yourself, with Hay House very soon.

I've helped people scale from startup to seven figures. Go from million-dollar years to million-dollar months. Land book deals. Secure TED Talks. Blow up their social media. Pop off in the press. My most recent success story ended up with a magazine cover, a TV expert role – and her face on a billboard in Times Square.

I'm not a jack of all trades. But I'm absolutely a master of the ones that matter – and I'd love to help you get your branding right, so everything else you build on top of it actually works.

why i built this

For years, I only had two strategic offerings: a Power Hour, and a 3-Month Coaching Container.

But I kept running into the same problem.

  • A single hour wasn't enough time to do proper branding work – positioning, persona, messaging, and verbal identity all require real thought, not just sixty minutes.
  • And the Container was brilliant for people ready to go deep, but what a lot of people actually wanted was to get straight into marketing – not spend their first month laying brand foundations first.

So I built the Sprint to fill that gap, sitting exactly in between. A focused month, entirely dedicated to getting your branding right – so your marketing actually has something solid to stand on.

However, I want to be clear: this isn't a prerequisite for my 3-Month Coaching Container. (Though you're more than welcome to join that afterwards, if you'd like to.)

Instead, it's an intensive way to work with me on your branding strategy alone – so you stop wasting time and money on marketing, and start actually seeing results. Once you've got the strategy, you can put it to work yourself.

(It also comes complete with documents you can hand to your team, or your AI: SOPs, so your team's briefed properly from day one, and Skills, so everything your AI tells you to say or write sounds exactly like you.)

example breakdown

Every Sprint is tailored to what your audit uncovers, but here's the typical shape:

BEFORE

Onboarding Call + Business Audit
We kick off properly – covering your intentions for our time together, the problems you're longing to solve, and the goals you're hoping to hit. Before we build anything, I diagnose exactly what's holding your branding and marketing back – and map out precisely what needs fixing, and in what order.

WEEK 1

Positioning
We work out exactly where you stand in the market, and what makes you the only choice, rather than one of many. You leave with your Positioning Playbook.

WEEK 2

Persona
We define who you are at work – on purpose, not by accident. You leave with your Persona Profile.

WEEK 3

Messaging
We turn your positioning and persona into words people actually understand, and remember. You leave with your Messaging Framework, covering both your core message and your offer-level messaging.

WEEK 4

Verbal Identity
We lock in your voice, tone, grammar, and lexicon, so everything you write from here on sounds unmistakably like you. You leave with your Verbal Identity Guide.

AFTER

Brand Bible Creation + Offboarding Call
Everything gets compiled into one manual – your Positioning, Persona, Messaging, and Verbal Identity, together at last, yours to keep and use for years. We talk through what's next – whether that's applying your new foundations to your marketing yourself, or continuing the work together inside my 3-Month Coaching Container.

A quick, honest note on scope: we always start with branding, because that's where the biggest wins are. If your foundations turn out lighter than expected, we'll use any spare time in the month to start applying them to your marketing, too.

is the 30-day sprint a fit?

THIS IS FOR YOU IF…
  • Your marketing's wasting your time, and costing you money.
  • You want your branding fixed, so your marketing can finally get results.
THIS IS NOT FOR YOU IF…
  • You've got one specific problem, not a whole foundation to lay → book a Power Hour instead – sixty focused minutes on the exact thing that's stuck.
  • You want ongoing, deeper support over months, not weeks → the 3-Month Coaching Container picks up where the Sprint ends, and goes further.

It was like Vanessa could read my mind - she articulated my message in a way that sounded exactly like me.

"I cannot thank Vanessa enough for her wisdom and guidance in helping me to get greater clarity on my message. Her personality is the right balance of masculine and feminine energies for me which meant I felt safe and supported but accountable and empowered. At times it was like Vanessa was able to read my mind in her ability to articulate my message in a way that [...] sounded like me and the messages I had rattling around in my head but could not clearly articulate! She is a super genius and I am grateful that I now have clear messaging that I am able to use to strengthen my marketing with my audience! Thank you again Vanessa"

DOMINIQUE MULLALLYprofit + wealth coach

It became so obvious to me how I should be communicating with my audience. I'm constantly looking back at my notes for the confidence to shout about my services.

"When it came to communicating with potential clients so that they understood who I was and what I offered, I really struggled. Ness was able to dig into my business to understand who my ideal client is and how I best serve their pain points through my services. Then by learning my own tone of voice, Ness made it so obvious to me how I should be communicating to my targeted audience. I found Ness really easy to get along with and enjoyed her messaging process. I just felt understood and now, wether it's emailing clients, having a sales call or writing an IG post. I'm constantly looking back over my messaging notes with Ness as they give me the confidence to shout out about my services allowing me to help others. If anybody is struggling on how to communicate effectively with potential clients like I was or needs more clarity with their brands messaging, I can't stress enough the value Ness will bring by working with her."

ALEC PENNEYtech expert + service provider

My message was hard to articulate, because it's so psychological and spiritual. Getting clear made it so much easier to actually market.

"I worked with Ness on my messaging and she was a dream to work with! I have more clarity than ever! She was super professional, and I loved the depth of our work together. I would highly recommend working with her if you need clarity on your messaging, vision and so much more!"

DUUUDE:

you complain people aren't paying you attention...

...but YOU'RE not paying attention to the ONE thing that would make them do just that – your brand.

If we focused on that for just 4 weeks, I could help you dial in your brand positioning, persona, messaging, and verbal identity so your marketing funnel actually converts.

Think about the customer journey. Every single relationship you build with a prospect moves through three distinct phases, and your brand is the fuel for all of them:
  • 1. Curiosity (The Hook)
This is where you stop people in their tracks. By nailing your brand positioning, you figure out exactly what makes your business useful and different from the competition. Your message cuts through the noise and turns their heads because you are addressing a raw problem or a deep desire they have right now.

  • 2. Enlightenment (The Trust)
Once you have their attention, how do you hold it? You get them to lean in. This is where your brand messaging and persona do the heavy lifting. You clearly educate the prospect on how your service solves their specific problem. And by using a distinct verbal brand identity you sound like a real, trustworthy human instead of a robot pretending to be one that may kill us all in a decade. They stop scrolling and start hanging on your every word.

  • 3. Commitment (The Close)
You’ve driven their attention this far – now you get them to follow your lead. Because your positioning was sharp and your verbal identity built massive trust, the final ask feels totally natural. Whether it's pressing the buy button or booking a call, they are ready to commit to you...

...the question is – are you ready to commit to me?
